 | The Paganini Competition (or Premio Paganini or Paganini Concore) is an international violin competition named after the famed virtuoso and founder of contemporary violin technique Niccolò Paganini (see image). Created in 1954 it has been carried out ever since in the months of September and October. The "Paganini Competition" is one of the most important violin competitions. It is held every two years at Carlo Felice theatre in Genoa, Italy. There are three levels of competition: preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals and repertoire that is played includes solo violin, violin and piano accompaniment, and violin and orchestra. |
| Violinists of all nationalities, duly registered, born between 30th April 1978 and 30th April 1992 are eligible to participate in the competition. The competition will take place from 25th September to 5th October 2008. The Preliminary, Semi-final and Final Stages are open to the public and will be held at the Carlo Felice Theatre of Genoa. The Preliminary Stage will take place from 26th to 28th September 2008. In case of a large number of participants, this stage could last until 29th September 2008. The Semi-final Stage, to which no more than twelve competitors will be admitted, will take place on 30th September and 1st October 2008. The Final Stage, to which no more than six competitors will be admitted, will take place on 4th and 5th October 2008. Competitors must perform the Capricci by Paganini during the Preliminary and Semi-final Stages of the competition using the urtext edition G. Henle Verlag (HN 450). All works must be played from memory, except items 1) and 5) of the Semi-final Stage. The competition and the prize-giving ceremony during the closing ceremony of the Christopher Columbus Celebrations, on October 12th, will be filmed and recorded and broadcast on radio, television and the Internet. All the relative rights (including transmission and reproduction on support, and photographic or other reproduction of the competition) are owned by the City Council of Genoa which is not obliged to pay any kind of fee to any third party.
